The task of shopping & deciding what to wear for family photos can often leave us feeling overwhelmed and stressed. As moms, we aren’t always sure what outfits complement each other or what are the most flattering choices, especially with our ever-changing bodies.
Shopping for new clothing and the sheer number of options available can make the process even more challenging and frustrating to figure out, especially if you have kids with strong opinions about what they want to wear. However, imagine if preparing for family photos and selecting the perfect wardrobe could be a simple, enjoyable experience. With some careful planning, organization, and a few helpful tips, dressing for your family photoshoot can become an effortless and delightful task.
Selecting the right color palette is essential when deciding what to wear for family photos. Rather than overly matching, aim for a cohesive color scheme that complements each family member’s individual style. Start by choosing two or three core colors and incorporating them throughout the family photo outfits in various shades, patterns, or accessories. Consider the season, location, and backdrop of your photoshoot to ensure your chosen colors will stand out and enhance the overall aesthetic of the images. I often recommend soft neutral tones paired with muted shades of blues, greens and soft pinks.
One of the most important aspects of selecting family photo outfits is ensuring everyone feels comfortable and at ease in their clothing. Prioritize comfort by picking outfits that fit well and suit each person’s personal style. When you and your family feel good in their clothes, their confidence will shine through in the photos. Comfortable clothing also allows for natural movement and poses, which makes for more authentic and candid shots.
Adding textures and layers to your family photo outfits can add detail to your overall look. Depending on the season and weather, consider incorporating different fabrics and textures such as knit, lace, denim, or linen. Layering options like cardigans or scarves can not only provide warmth and comfort but also create depth and dimension in your photographs, and you can always wear them for a part of your session and then remove them to give a good variety to your images.
Accessories can be the finishing touch to your family photo outfits, adding personality and flair to your images. Oftentimes my clients choose not to wear accessories at all as they want a more natural look; they might go for small earrings and a simple bracelet. However important accessories are to you, I would suggest choosing ones that aren’t too distracting. Some ideas for tasteful accessories include necklaces, bracelets, hats, belts, or shoes. Keep your overall color palette in mind when choosing accessories to complement the outfits and enhance your look.
Winter is a magical time for family photos, with the chilly weather and snow-covered landscapes creating the perfect backdrop. I am usually in Canada in December over the holidays and often plan a few winter sessions. When selecting winter family photo shoot outfits, focus on warmth and coziness without sacrificing style. Consider incorporating layers such as sweaters and cardigans, or even bring a warm blanket to keep everyone comfortable and toasty, especially as we near closer to the end of the session after the sun sets. You can still follow a similar color palette with neutrals but bring in more deep shades of beiges and warm neutrals. Don’t forget to include coordinating accessories like scarves, hats, and gloves to complete your winter family photo look.
Spring brings blooming flowers and warmer weather, making it a popular season for family photos, especially in Southern California where we get a lot of super blooms. When choosing spring outfits, think about incorporating lighter fabrics and pastel colors that reflect the freshness of the season. Floral prints, lace, and linens are popular choices for spring family outfits. I recommend going with a color palette that includes soft shades of pink, lavender, mint green, baby blues and of course neutrals, which can complement the natural scenery.
Summer family photos often capture the fun and carefree spirit of the season. When selecting outfits for a summer photo shoot, consider lightweight and breathable fabrics like cotton or light linens to keep everyone cool and comfortable. You can incorporate more colors without going with anything too bright or distracting such as muted turquoise, yellows, blues, and soft corals to reflect the energy of summer. Casual and relaxed styles, like sundresses, khaki shorts, and short-sleeve shirts, are ideal for summer family photos. Accessories like wide-brimmed hats, and sandals can complete the perfect summer look.
Fall is a popular time for family photos as we gear up for the holiday season. For fall family photo outfits, think about incorporating warm, earthy tones such as shades of neutrals, browns or even deeper oranges. Layering is key for fall, so include items like sweaters to add depth and texture to your outfits. Fabrics like khakis, corduroy, and soft knits can provide both warmth and style for your fall family photos. Accessories such as boots and scarves, can add the perfect finishing touch to your autumn-inspired wardrobe.
What if you had a rack of curated dresses to choose from, in a range of size & styles at no added cost? And clothes for your little ones that will compliment your choice perfectly?
