Today, more than ever, parents have pretty great control over how to set their children up for a lifelong love of learning. Whether it’s through daycare, preschool, or homeschool, the first few years of your child’s life are the perfect time to start preparing them for educational success. Little ones are constantly learning through sensory interactions and play as they explore the world around them. Luckily, there’s an entire educational philosophy that embraces independent play and discovery in a gently structured environment: Montessori in Newport Beach!
Named for Italian physician and educator Maria Montessori, Montessori schooling embraces an independent learning experience led by the individual child and inspired by young children’s capacity to absorb knowledge from their surroundings. She discovered that by allowing children to focus solely on a task that piques his or her interest, they’ll be more likely to explore a concept in-depth, guiding themselves through a learning experience. She also believed that by respecting children’s work and giving them the time to work uninterrupted, kids could grow not only academically but spiritually, emotionally, and socially.
Today, Montessori schools incorporate several unique characteristics as a part of their curriculum. Most schools use mixed-age grouping in a three-year cycle, allowing students an opportunity to learn from one another and act as role models. Learning environments are catered specifically to the child, with a full array of developmentally appropriate activities and, usually, an outdoor learning environment that allows children to interact with the natural world. Programs are designed to inspire age-appropriate independence, creating a society of capable learners who know how to work alone and together as a team. When it comes to teachers, they guide each child through the curriculum in individual and small-group lessons, introducing important concepts and materials in a way that interests and engages students.
Montessori schools may not be the right fit for every child, but for the right kid, it can make all the difference in the world. If you think your little one would do well in a Montessori setting, check out these Newport Beach Montessori schools to see if you can find one for your family!

Newport Montessori School provides Newport Beach children an enriching, supportive environment that encourages them to grow to their fullest potential. It’s a private, independent institution that serves children 18 months through 6 years old, respecting every student as an individual and a valued part of the community.
The school is divided into three programs: Toddler, Preschool, and Kindergarten. In the Toddler classrooms, everything is the perfect size for little learners, and materials are laid out in an organized and inviting way within reach of little hands. Easels, fossils, kitchen utensils, and picture books are all available for when a kid is ready to learn, as well as other tools to encourage the development of fine motor skills like zipping, snapping, tying shoelaces, preparing snacks, and more. In the Preschool program, kids continue to learn self-motivation and self-discipline while exploring the alphabet, numbers, sequences, and patterns. Meanwhile, in kindergarten, lessons become more abstract and collective, relying more heavily on problem-solving and critical thinking to prepare children for an easier transition into elementary school.

Heritage Montessori School is a beautiful establishment serving children ages 2 through 10 with nurturing and holistic programs. It was one of California’s first Montessori schools, and the name “Heritage” is an homage to the school’s personal connection to Dr. Maria Montessori; the Head of the School is a third-generation Montessori practitioner whose mother and grandmother lived and worked alongside Dr. Montessori back in the late 1930s.
Heritage Montessori School offers programming for little ones ages 2 through 10 years old. Their Toddler program utilizes the natural enthusiasm of early childhood to introduce children to a wide range of concepts that help them gain a deeper understanding as well as control of their environment. The Primary Program focuses on five areas of learning: practical life, sensorial, language arts, math, and the exploration of physical, cultural, and natural worlds. Lastly, the Elementary Program is for kids in 1st, 2nd, and 3rd grades, offering unique and age-appropriate materials to help them become accountable for their use of time and to self-evaluate strengths and areas of growth.
