Family Photos With Katelyn

It was such a joy having Katelyn and her sweet family join me for family photos outdoors! Katelyn is the owner of A Touch of Pink, a fashion, family, beauty and lifestyle blog, and shared some wonderful tips on how to prepare for family photos with kids that I want to share & elaborate on below.

Tips to Keep in Mind When Shooting Family Photos Outdoors

First, Katelyn suggests setting your expectations low on how the session will go. She goes on to say “you’ll be pleasantly surprised how much better of a mood everyone will be in when  they too aren’t feeling the pressure from mom or dad” and I couldn’t agree enough. That’s where I step in, as the photographer, to help guide everyone. If mom and dad are able to sit back and allow me to direct kids, that’s when the real authentic moments unfold. I want everyone happy and comfortable during the session!

Next, she suggests bringing mess-free snacks like goldfish & their favorite treat for the end of the session. This is a great idea and gives both parents & me a little extra incentive for the kids as needed. She also suggests bringing a tide pen, hair products, and wipes to have on hand as needed, which is brilliant! It’s easier to remember these small things with a newborn, because you have a diaper bag full of items, but once the kids get older, we tend to forget the small details that are so helpful.

Lastly, Katelyn goes on to remind us that “you can’t control how your kids will act, but you can control your attitude and outlook on the photo shoot” and they will feed off of your energy. As a family photographer, I can say this makes the absolute biggest impact on your experience as a whole. I know you want to have beautiful moments captured and we can achieve that by following my prompts and letting your kids be their authentic, joyful self.
